TA.b Quickie - Lion Electric school buses qualify for new EPA Clean School Bus Program
Lion Electric is participating in the EPA's Clean School Bus Program where the full cost of the LionC school bus (left) may be covered. The program helps to bring healthy commutes to students around the country, especially in underserved communities which have historically had disproportionately poor air quality. It will also reduce student movement costs. “As the leader in all-electric school buses, Lion is in a fantastic position to help customers secure this new EPA funding for both all-electric school buses as well as charging infrastructure, which in some cases will fund the entire purchase of a new zero-emission Lion school bus,” said Marc Bedard, CEO – Founder of Lion Electric. “Lion put its first electric school buses on the road in the U.S. in 2016,which have since been driven in real world operating conditions. We are clearly an early mover in the space and, with our planned capacity of 20,000 vehicles per year at our Illinois manufacturing facility, are ideally positioned to put made in America electric school buses on the road at scale. This federal program is a major step in transitioning to sustainable school transportation, bringing significant improvements to the health of our children and communities. We applaud the EPA for their commitment to deploy all-electric school buses.” Cool. Go to the EPA's or Lion Electric's websites for more info. CLick on "read more" below to view the media release.

Lincoln shows EV design direction with Lincoln Star Concept
Is this the rumored Lincoln version of the Mustang Mach-e? Could be and it would certainly be a good place to start. This is a concept that says "this is what we're gonna do. Do you like it?" The overall design is attractive utilizing many Lincoln details like the front light bar and the illuminated logo. The flanks are clean and nicely rounded. The roof has a graceful taper leading to a rear pillar with awkward detailing. The ducktail rear end needs some work, but it might grow on you. The media release outlines numerous features like the rejuvenative moods that a driver can select to unwind (wind up?). Since this is a design concept, no EV specifics were given but expect motors, power, tange, efficiency, etc, to be class competitive when the real vehicle hits showrooms. “As Lincoln enters the next chapter in our transition to a zero-emissions future, the Lincoln Star Concept will lead the way for our portfolio of fully electric vehicles,” said Joy Falotico, president, Lincoln. “It is an excellent example of how we are redefining luxury for the next generation as we work to transform the vehicle into a third space – a true place of sanctuary – for our clients.” Click on "read more" below to view the media release, two more pics (including one with all the vehicle's orifices opened including the frunk), and Lincoln's design video. BMW shows all-new 2023 X1 compact SAV
When you read through the extensive media release after the jump, the first thing that grabs you is the plethora of standard and optional equipment. In other words, this "little" puppy ain't gonna be cheap (inexpensive). With pretty much all of BMW's grab bag of safety, performance, anf tech equipment available on BMW's little sports activity vehicle (SAV), you know that you won't be missing out on anything by not buying a larger vehicle (automakers used to save the best "stuff" for the bigger models). While it's not listed in the media release, I believe that this new X1 is based on a front-wheel-drive platform (that is shared with the Mini Countryman) but for the US all models will have xDrive all-wheel drive as standard. Interestingly, the xDrive system is mechanical in nature and not an electric device which is sometimes easier to place in a smaller vehicle while maintaining interior room. A 2.0-liter, turbocharged four (241 hp) is the only engine option and comes mated to a seven-speed, dual-clutch transmission. The equipment list goes on and on so I won't list it here, so click on "read more" below to view all the info. There is also a brief video after the jump as well. I was disappointed when I read the release that no mention was made about rumored upcoming hybrid and EV (iX1) versions of the X1. It has been reported that the next Mini Countryman, that shares this platform and underpinnings, will be EV only. We should be getting more details over the next few months. Until then, enjoy BMW's newest SAV...

Buick shows Wildcat EV concept pointing the way forward for Buick design
Buick recently debuted the new Wildcat Concept EV to show the brand's new design language and electrifying future. As you probably know, Buick is much, much more popular in China as it is in the US so many current Buicks are not even available in the US. I can't say whether this concept was designed with China and Chinese customers in mind, but the concept is stunning even though many details probably wouldn't see production. “The Wildcat EV concept represents the real design future for the brand,” said Sharon Gauci, executive director, Global Buick and GMC Design. “Buick has always been forward looking and this expression is a glimpse of where we’re going, and the optimism we have for the limitless possibilities of an electric future.” Firstly, automakers these days don't make coupes, even ones like this concept that has large and specially-articulated doors that allow easy access for all passengers. The fastback roofline might be another casualty although the integration of the taillights into the roof is nicely done (watch video). But most importantly, this concept announces Buick's all EV future. With a slightly higher roofline and four doors this would make a nice Buick Electra (see previous post link below to view that concept from 2020). There is a lot to like here. Can't wait to see how Buick fits this design into its future vehicles. Click on "read more" below to view the media release for mor information. Enjoy!

GM's BrightDrop adds 150 EVs (electric vans) to FedEx fleet
The BrightDrop division of General Motors has stepped up production and delivery of its electric vans with 150 new vehicles being added to the FedEx delivery fleet. "BrightDrop is a business reimagining the commercial delivery and logistics industry for an all-electric future. Its portfolio of electric vehicles, smart containers, and software are designed to decarbonize last-mile deliveries and reduce congestion for a smarter, more sustainable future." The first E-vans will be put into service in Southern CAlifornia at first and with today's high fuel costs, this happened at a great time since EVs are generally much cheaper to operate than their ICE counterparts. “At FedEx, we have ambitious sustainability goals, and our phased approach to vehicle electrification is a crucial part of our roadmap to achieve carbon neutral global operations,” said Mitch Jackson, Chief Sustainability Officer, FedEx. “In just under six months, we’ve taken delivery of 150 BrightDrop Zevo 600s for our parcel pickup and delivery fleet. In today’s climate of chip shortages and supply chain issues, that’s no ordinary feat and a true testament to the collaboration between FedEx and BrightDrop.” For more info, click on "read more" below to view the FedEx and BrightDrop media releases.

All-new 2023 Honda HR-V debuts
The previous generation HR-V was one of my favorite designs that Honda currently has available in the US (the Honda e from Europe is right up there), so this update is a little disappointing. While this new car is attractive, it lacks some of the elements that made the current HR-V such a design standout. Honestly, this new car kinds looks like it was designed in Dearborn, Mi (Ford) and the rear fascia is generic crossover, Not ugly, but... The pics I've chosen for this post are the Sport model (except the side view after the jump) whose blacked-out elements accentuate the positive elements of the design. There are many improvements to the '23 HR-V like an updated interior, a new engine, bigger size (if you consider that an upgrade) and lots more tech and safety equipment. The new engine is a 2.0-liter four that puts out 158 hp (up almost 20 hp) but that number is still under-whelming even for a vehicle of this compact size. Fuel economy is 26/32 (cirt/highway) which is good but not great. Subtract about 1 mpg each if you choose all-wheel drive. Prices start at $23,650 (plus taxes, license, fees, options, destination) for the LX FWD model and go up to $28,950 + for the EX-L model with AWD. Sport versions fall in between the other two trim levels. One of the biggest disappointments is that there are NO EV or hybrid options. It says something when Ford's Maverick compact truck gets far superior fuel economy when compared to this new crossover. Maybe those models will be added in the future. This is what Honda gets for following Toyota's line-up decisions. Honda will catch-up in the future, In fact, they just sourced a new EV crossover from GM and we should be seeing that model in about one year (info to come). If you've gotta have a Honda, this new HR-V has a lot going for it and it should be relatively popular. I just expect more from Honda I guess. More to come. Select "read more" below to see lots of info in the extensive media release and a brief b-roll video after the jump.

Refreshed 2023 Nissan Leaf EV gets new(ish) looks, lower pricing and added equipment
For the 2023 model year, Nissan gave the Leaf EV a few updates, a simplified line-up, and lower pricing. The '23 Leaf gets a revised grille and headlamps that more closely mirror the rest of Nissan's models along with other styling tweaks. The Leaf line-up has been simplified to just two models: the Leaf S and Leaf SV Plus. "All Leaf models feature Nissan's Safety Shield® 360 as standard equipment, inclusive of six active driver assistance technologies that can help drivers avoid or lessen the severity of a crash. SV PLUS models include ProPILOT Assist3 and Intelligent Around View Monitor®." Prices start at $27,800 (plus taxes, license, fees and a $1,095 destination charge) for the Leaf S and jump to $35,800 + for the loaded SV Plus model. Battery sizes vary with the S getting a 40 kWh battery (EPA est. range 149 miles) and the SV Plus stepping things up to a 60 kWh battery (EPA est. range 212 miles). One new option are the 17-inch, multi-spoke wheels shown in the pics. While the Leaf is a tad larger, the Chevy Bolt competition is a touch cheaper, faster to charge, and has greater range (up to 249 miles). At this time, both cars are still eligible for the $7,500 Federal Tax credit (for those who qualify) which would make either car an inexpensive way to go electric. Click on "read more" below to view the media release, additional pics, and a b-roll video, Here's to more choices, The Tennessee-built 2023 Leaf is available now.

Our Next Energy (One) and BMW to collaborate on next-gen battery modules capable of over 600-mile range
This is one of those things/ideas that you either think, "Why didn't someone think of this before?" or "Don't they already do this?" Our Next Energy (One) is collaborating with BMW to develop a battery storage system that would allow the iX SAV EV (shown) to deliver more than 600 miles of range per charge. "ONE’s unique long-range Gemini technology reduces lithium use by 20% while reducing graphite use by 60% and minimizing the use of nickel and cobalt. In doing so, ONE is creating more sustainable energy storage technology that can significantly reduce environmental impact." In other words. they're using xpecific battery-module types for specific uses like power delivery and energy storage. I think the biggest obstacle to this new system is finding and/or building the battery modules themselves...enter One. For example. Tesla uses easily available and cheaper batteries in their China-built vehicles (as opposed to US- or German-built vehicles), but they are all the same battery type in each vehicle. Early results from One's tests are promising. For more ino regarding this promising new technology, click on "read more" below and view the media release and a brief video after the jump. Much more to come I'm sure.

Designer Paul Smith fashions a classic Mini for the future
Designer Paul Smith has been creating limited-edition and concept Minis for some time including the Mini Paul Smith Edition that was built in the late 90s. Using that limited-production model as its base, the Mini Recharged dumps the ICE and replaces it with a modern electric drivetrain. (Specifics weren't given about power and range, but then, why would they on a "concept" vehicle.) "Three things describe this car perfectly: quality, sustainability and functionality," the designer explains. "This car also respects the past,” Smith adds. The Mini Recharged has an interior with unique features like "missing" door panels and rubber floor mats for lighter weight and a dash that has most gauges removed and replaced by phone apps that can be accessed on your phone that is held in place by a magnet near the removable steering wheel (for ease of entry/exit). The special blue color was chosen by Smith from a favorite shirt that the designer owned. This special Mini was built for the Salon de Mobile 2022 in Milan and will be introduced officially this month. As time marches forward, I think you will see more of these types of conversions where the ICE is removed and replaced with electric drive. In fact, Zelectric Motors in San Diego is already converting Volkswagen and Porsche products using mostly Tesla parts. Zelectrics work is flawless and also not cheap. Check out Zelectric's site here. At the end of the media release, Mini hints at further work with Recharged Heritage Limited with their Mini Recharged project. Maybe anyone will be able to purchase an electrified, classic Mini soon. Stay tuned. For more info, click on "read more" below to view the media release and two more pics.
