Volvo XC40 Recharge P8 AWD model heads to the streets

Volvo Cars of Sweden and the company's current owners Zhejiang Geely Holding of China have been on a roll since Geely's takeover in 2010. With the capital infusion that Volvo needed, the company's line-up has been totally overhauled with numerous additions like the model highlighted here, the Volvo XC40 Recharge P8 AWD (say that ten times fast). The compact XC40 crossover is one of Volvo's stand outs with its good-looks and convenient size. Volvo is committed to releasing an all-electric version of each of its models (with the rest being hybrids) within the next few years. This will allow Volvo to reduce emissions, improve gas mileage numbers, and improve overall efficiency. Plus consumers are moving in this direction...

The XC40 Recharge's battery pack is mounted low in the car's frame (see pic after the jump) which improves space utilization and lowers the car's center of gravity for improved handling. Early tests reveal an expected 200 mile range with decent fast-charging rates. Horsepower numbers from the electric motors (front and rear for all-wheel drive) jump to 402 with instant EV torque.  More weight from the batteries will slow things down a bit, but expect a performance improvement over the gas model.

The interior is updated with a new infotainment system based on the Android Operating system that is fully integrated with Volvo On Call.

Overall this is a good-looking EV that should find many happy owners. Improvements over time will increase range to where the XC40 Recharge (the name for Volvo EVs) could become your every car. A 200-mile range figure before recharging is satisfactory for most folks though. I hope we see many of these out on the road. Not sure about the body-colored grille though. I guess there is satin black paint to fix that.

Volvo Cars launches fully electric Volvo XC40 Recharge as part of new electrified car line

Future Volvo customers will need to answer one fundamental question: do you want a new Volvo with a cord or without one? Today Volvo Cars introduces the XC40 Recharge, the company’s first ever fully electric car and the first model to appear in its brand new Recharge car line concept.

The XC40 Recharge, based on the multi-award-winning and best-selling XC40 small SUV, is the first of a family of fully electric Volvos. It represents a true milestone for Volvo Cars: the company’s first electric car and the first Volvo with a brand new infotainment system powered by Google’s Android operating system.

Over the next five years, Volvo Cars will launch a fully electric car every year, as it seeks to make all-electric cars 50 percent of global sales by 2025, with the rest hybrids. Recharge will be the overarching name for all chargeable Volvos with a fully electric and plug-in hybrid powertrain.

From early 2020 customers entering the Volvo Cars website will first be asked whether they want a Volvo Recharge car or not. To further encourage electric driving, every Volvo Recharge plug-in hybrid model will come with free electricity for a year, provided through a refund for the average electricity cost during that period.

“We have said this several times before: for Volvo Cars, the future is electric,” said Håkan Samuelsson, chief executive. “Today we take a major new step in that direction with the launch of our fully electric XC40 and the Recharge car line.”

The XC40 Recharge is everything customers expect from a Volvo, with the addition of a state-of-the-art, fully electric all-wheel drive powertrain that offers a range of over 400 km (WLTP) [200 miles in U.S.**] on a single charge and output of 408hp [402 hp in U.S.]. The battery charges to 80 % of its capacity in 40 mins on a fast-charger system.***

The Android-powered infotainment system is fully integrated with Volvo On Call, the company’s digital connected services platform. Via Volvo On Call plug-in hybrid drivers can track how much time they spend driving on electric power.

To meet the anticipated growth in demand for its Recharge cars, Volvo Cars will triple production capacity for electrified cars and will as of next year prepare a Designer’s Choice selection of popular Recharge models, offering the potential for radically reduced delivery times. Volvo Cars aims for plug-in hybrid cars to make up 20 percent of total sales in 2020.

Every Volvo model in the range includes a Recharge option, from the small XC40 SUV via the 60 Series cars to the company’s flagship, the large XC90 SUV. Volvo Cars is the only car maker to offer a plug-in variant on every model in its line-up.

The XC40 Recharge and the Recharge car line are also tangible proof points of the company’s ambitious new action plan, also launched today, which represents concrete actions in line with the Paris climate agreement and supports Volvo Cars’ ambition to become a climate-neutral company by 2040. Strong early consumer demand for fully electric Volvo XC40 Recharge P8 AWD

Volvo Cars has now formally opened order books for the XC40 Recharge P8 AWD, the company’s first fully electric car based on the best-selling SUV, in selected markets.

Tens of thousands of consumers have shown keen interest in the all-electric XC40 and the company already received several thousands of firm orders even before the formal start of sales. Production and the first customer deliveries of the XC40 Recharge P8 are scheduled to begin later this year.

The initial order intake is the latest proof of strong demand for Volvo Cars’ Recharge car line, the name for all Volvos with a fully electric and plug-in hybrid powertrain. The company aims to make all-electric cars 50 per cent of global sales by 2025, with the rest hybrids.

Volvo Cars sold almost 46,000 plug-in hybrid cars in 2019, an increase of 23 per cent compared to 2018 and more than double the amount sold in 2017. During the fourth quarter of 2019, plug-in hybrids comprised more than 20 per cent of all Volvos sold in Europe.

The company is also seeing strong and continued growth in terms of online customer configurations for Recharge cars, which counted for around a third of all configurations in the region during the fourth quarter of 2019.

“It is clear that customers like what they see in our Recharge car line,” said Björn Annwall, head of EMEA and global commercial operations. “Our Recharge cars are everything customers expect from a Volvo, with the addition of a state-of-the-art fully electric or plug-in hybrid powertrain.”

The XC40 Recharge P8 is the first of a family of fully electric Volvos. It represents a true milestone for Volvo Cars, as the company’s first fully electric car and the first Volvo with a brand new infotainment system powered by Google’s Android operating system.

As a fully electric version of the best-selling XC40 SUV, the first Volvo to win the prestigious European Car of the Year award, the XC40 Recharge P8 is based on the Compact Modular Architecture (CMA), an advanced vehicle platform co-developed within the Geely Group.

The all-wheel drive XC40 Recharge P8 offers a range of over 400 km (WLTP) on a single charge and output of 408hp. The battery charges to 80 % of its capacity in 40 mins on a fast-charger system.

The new, Android-powered infotainment system offers customers unprecedented personalisation, improved levels of intuitiveness and embedded Google technology and services, such as the Google Assistant, Google Maps and the Google Play Store. The XC40 Recharge P8 also receives larger software and operating system updates over the air.

While building on the excellent safety standards of the original XC40, Volvo Cars safety engineers have completely redesigned and reinforced the frontal structure of the Recharge P8 to address the absence of an engine, meet Volvo Cars’ high safety requirements and help keep people as safe as in any other Volvo.

The battery is protected by a safety cage embedded in the middle of the car’s body structure. Its placement in the floor of the car also lowers the centre of gravity of the car, for better protection against roll-overs.

Inside, an innovative approach to all-round functionality provides drivers with plenty of storage space, for example in the doors, under the seats and in the trunk. Not having an internal combustion engine means the car provides drivers with even more storage space than the regular XC40, via a so-called ‘frunk’ under the front hood.
